Theatre: Miss Margarida's Way

Thurs, July 15 & 22, 2010-7pm

Fri., July 16 & 23, 2010 - 8 pm

Sat., July 17 & 24, 2010 - 8 pm

Sun., July 18 & 25, 2010 - 2 pm

8 pm

Wells Fargo Auditorium

$12, $10 seniors, students, NHCC & ATG members

It's both absurdist comedy and political allegory about a tyrannical school teacher and her class (the audience) written by Brazilian playwright Roberto Athayde.  Miss Margarida's Way has had a long history, and the NHCC and Camino Real Productions are pleased to be able to present it in Albuquerque for the first time. Apareceu a Margarida was first produced in 1973 in playwright Roberto Athayde's native Brazil which, at the time, was under a brutal military dictatorship. It was promptly closed by the authorities, who seemed to find its depiction of the tyrannical school teacher and her methods a little too close to the bone-although, after some changes were made, it was allowed to reopen. Over the years Miss Margarida's Way has become an international classic, with nearly 300 productions in more than 30 countries.

La Casa de Bernarda Alba

October 1-3, 2010
7 pm Friday and Saturday
2 pm Sunday

Albuquerque Journal Theatre

$15, $20, $25 with $5 discount for students, seniors and NHCC members

La Casa de Bernarda Alba, by Federico Garcia Lorca, portrays the tragedy of individual oppression in rural Spain with an extraordinary blend of lyrical passion and social detail, both hallmarks of Lorca's drama.  The play centers on the events of an Andalusian house during a period of mourning, in which the title character wields total control over her five daughters. The deliberate exclusion of any male character from the action is highly significant as it helps to build up the high level of sexual tension that is present throughout the play.  The play explores themes of repression, passion, and conformity, and inspects the effects of men upon women.  Directed by René Buch, Artistic Director of New York City's Repertorio Espanol and performed by Repertorio Español's cast of Latin American and American performing artists.  A coproduction by NHCC and Teatro Nuevo Mexico.  In Spanish with English supertitles.

The Albuquerque Film Festival and NHCC present the New Mexico premiere of The Dry Land, a Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee. The Dry Land is a gripping tale of James Ryan, a young war veteran, as he returns from Iraq to life in his West Texas home. His wife (America Ferrera), his mother, and his friend provide support, but they can't fully understand the pain and suffering he has felt since his tour of duty ended. Lonely, James reconnects with an army buddy who provides him with compassion and camaraderie during his battle to process his experiences in Iraq. For tickets and information call (505) 724-4771.
