Eddie Domínguez

born 1957 Tucumcari, New Mexico
lives Albuquerque, New Mexico

Eddie Domínguez began his career as a tin worker within the New Mexican tradition, and has since worked with such materials as glass, wood, found objects, and photographic media. Now well known for his unorthodox use of ceramics, the artist is fascinated with the home and its furnishings. He creates sculptures with a practical function that treads the boundaries between fine art, craft, and kitsch.

A true innovator in the art of ceramics, Domínguez makes dinnerware sets that are unrecognizable as such, until disassembled. When assembled, they often appear to be luxuriant gardens, replete with foliage and blossoms. The Rose Garden is a place setting for six that disguises mugs and glasses as stems, plates as leaves, soup bowls as blossoms, and salt and pepper shakers as petals. According to the artist, "Discovery is seeing something new in something already familiar."
