Aquí Estamos! We are here! This exhibition of works from the permanent collection of the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum celebrates the Latino artists who mark our world with their individual creative spirit. As a group, these selections visually illustrate the artists' enunciations of their diverse and complex experiences. Using a variety of approaches and media, the artists demonstrate the nuanced, fluid, and contested meaning of what it is to be Hispanic.

The intricate, yet monumental, blown glass and mixed media works of Einar and Jamex de la Torre mirror and address the complex experiences of living in a global society. The National Hispanic Cultural Center presents renowned Tejano music star Santiago Jiménez, Jr. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with San Antonio's accordion king in an exciting evening of Tex-Mex and conjunto music. Jimenez has toured the world and brings his lively show to the NHCC for one exciting night. Santiago Jiménez, Jr., born in 1944, was heir to a rich family tradition of button accordion playing. His grandfather Patricio Jiménez played the accordion, and he would take his son Santiago to hear German polka bands in New Braunfels. Santiago, Sr. became one of the seminal figures in the rise of the conjunto, being one of the first accordionists to add the string bass (tololoche), make phonograph recordings, and appear on the radio in the 1930s. Santiago, Jr.'s brother, Leonardo "Flaco" Jiménez, through his success in performing with country and western stars and popular music crossover groups, has become one of the most widely known Tejano accordionists. This exhibit examines some Mexican traditions and traces them to the trade that took place with the Philippines, especially through the port of Manila. Such Mexican icons as la China poblana, majólica pottery, papel chino, etc. are examined and their roots traced to the Manila trade which employed large galleon ships called Naos to transport merchandise and people.
