NaturalMente, a group show in the National Hispanic Cultural Center's Community Art Gallery, features artists that incorporate natural forms and organic materials. The diverse range of media includes photographs by Fernando Delgado, Rita Padilla Haufmann's fiber art, mezzotint prints by Carol Sanchez, and Camilla Trujillo's pottery. Their work reflects inspired responses to nature and creativity. NaturalMente compliments Land/Art, a regional collaboration taking place in the summer and fall of 2009. The exhibition opens on July 17, 2009 and runs through May 30, 2010. Join us for the artists' reception, scheduled for the evening August 7, 2009 at 6pm.

This exhibit examines some Mexican traditions and traces them to the trade that took place with the Philippines, especially through the port of Manila. Such Mexican icons as la China poblana, majólica pottery, papel chino, etc. are examined and their roots traced to the Manila trade which employed large galleon ships called Naos to transport merchandise and people. The intricate, yet monumental, blown glass and mixed media works of Einar and Jamex de la Torre mirror and address the complex experiences of living in a global society. Visually and socially timely, their work excels in peeling off the layers to get to the real issues of the twenty-first century. On view through August 16, 2009.

The Manoa Project is a performing arts program in partnership with the Tricklock Theatre Company held every summer at the NHCC. High school students throughout the state have the opportunity to train intensively in acting and then perform and tour locally an original play written by a fellow teen. This year's production is entitle STASIS by four-year Manoa student Amanda Burroughs about connections, family and loss. Come out and support our next generation of young playwrights!
