History Exhibit: The Three Sisters - Corn, Beans and Squash

This exhibit focuses on three main staples that have nourished Hispanic and Native American communities for generations: corn, beans and squash. The botanical, nutritional, gastronomic and cultural histories will be presented along with recipes based on using these three food groups in conjunction with chili and other traditional condiments. This exhibit is part of the 2009 "From Field to Feast" project funded by the NM Community Foundation and W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

NaturalMente, a group show in the National Hispanic Cultural Center's Community Art Gallery, features artists that incorporate natural forms and organic materials. The diverse range of media includes photographs by Fernando Delgado, Rita Padilla Haufmann's fiber art, mezzotint prints by Carol Sanchez, and Camilla Trujillo's pottery. Their work reflects inspired responses to nature and creativity. NaturalMente compliments Land/Art, a regional collaboration taking place in the summer and fall of 2009. The exhibition opens on July 17, 2009 and runs through May 30, 2010. Join us for the artists' reception, scheduled for the evening August 7, 2009 at 6pm.

Judy Baca is a world-renowned visual artist, arts activist, community leader and educator. She is best known for her large-scale public organizing murals involving extensive community dialogues and participation. Baca founded the first City of Los Angeles mural program in 1974 and in 1976 founded SPARC (Social and Public Art Resource Center) in Venice, California. SPARC is a socially relevant, activist minded and spirited organization, espousing public art as a tool for social change and self-transformation.

Join in on this invigorating, uplifting dance experience. Hailing from Miami, FL, and of Haitian descent, Nadine Desormeau has studied under the tutelage of Manno Merisier of the National Folkloric Ballet of Haiti. She is presently a performing artist, organizer and educator residing in Rio Rancho, NM. The Baile program at the NHCC features a wide variety of teachers and dance styles! Classes are free, but donations of $1 per class are encouraged. Classes are open to all ages and levels. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Confluencias: Inside Arte Cubano Contemporáneo is a major exhibition on Contemporary Cuban Art, which provides an exciting overview of what's happening now with significant Cuban artists and various media. The exhibition includes approximately 100 works by 40 artists working inside Cuba.
